first of all download the replacement driver HP_1020_replacement_drivers
1. Clear any offending files from the print spooler directory by deleting them from the following directory: C:\windows\system32\spool\printers
2. Replace the existing drivers with the ones from the download in the following directory: C:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32×86\3
3. Restart the print spooler by going to start, run, and typing (without the apostrophe): ‘services.msc’ and then press enter. Once you see the services management window scroll until you find ‘Print Spooler’. Right click on it and select start. If it is already running you can restart it.
4. Restart your computer and try to print something.

To solve it I had to delete a folder from the registry. I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList And deleted the SID folder for that particular user. (profile directory was C:\Users\%UserName%)
The following should serve as a temporary workaround. Use Start->Run to open Regedit and navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList”. Identify the problematic profile by going through each of the keys (folder icons) and looking at the “ProfileImagePath” string value. Once you’ve found the one with the problem, change the value of “State” to zero (double click on it and change the value). Do the same for “RefCount” (reset to zero). Restart your computer. Don’t logoff, restart – this is to remove the process lock on the ntuser.dat file. You should then be able to logon again.
